SUMMARY:Autism Spectrum Disorder workshop
DESCRIPTION:Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been increasingly diagnosed in recent years with international estimates of up to 1 in 68 people. Psychologists play a vital role in screening\, diagnosis\, and development of appropriate supports and interventions for individuals diagnosed with ASD across the lifespan. Practice may be targeted at core characteristics of social communication and restricted behaviours/interests\, as well as common co-morbidities such as challenging \nbehaviour and mental health. Thus\, there is a need for psychologists to be up-to-date with diagnostic criteria for ASD under the DSM-5\, recommendations for best practice in diagnosis and practice\, and to be aware of the wide variety of interventions available and the empirical evidence for effectiveness. Furthermore\, strategies to tailor interventions such as cognitive-behaviour therapy to the unique strengths and needs of individuals diagnosed with ASD is important. Drawing from an evidence-based practice approach that covers balancing research evidence\, practitioner expertise\, and client values and preferences\, this workshop will provide an overview of each of these areas along with practical strategies and examples for your practice. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nOutline DSM-5 criteria\, changes\, and controversies\nDemonstrate specialized knowledge of current assessment practices\nCritically evaluate ASD interventions and formulate an intervention plan based on assessment\nIdentify effective strategies to tailor interventions to individuals with ASD\n\nAbout the presenter \nJessica is a Senior Lecturer at Griffin University and a Clinical Psychologist.  She has provided training regularly to psychologists\, speech pathologists\, teachers and parents.  This has been done through Griffith University\, Gold Coast Branch and Psychology of Intellectual Disability and Autism Interest Group APS Branch Events\, Department of Education in Queensland\, Autism Queensland\, and in autism-specific Schools (Sycamore School and Giant Steps).  She also teaches at both postgraduate (clinical psychology) and undergraduate levels topics including lifespan development\, assessment\, and developmental disabilities.  This includes supervision of cognitive assessments/clinical practice by intern psychologists.
