The Health Workforce Scholarship Program is an initiative of the Australian Government Department of Health, administered in Western Australia by Rural Health West.  The Program provides scholarships and bursaries to help health professionals in remote and rural Australia retain and enhance their skills, capacity and scope of practice. Rural medical, nursing, midwifery, dentistry and allied health professionals, including Aboriginal health practitioners can apply for funding  towards: Undertaking further postgraduate study. Development and upskilling courses. One-off payments to cover the cost of training or course fees and/or to cover or partially cover some training-related expenses such as travel, where appropriate. The Country Women’s Association of WA and the Commercial Travellers’ Association of WA are offering a country based registered or enrolled nurse wanting to undertake further study, particularly courses involving children, to apply for the CWA / CTA Henderson Field Scholarship. Benzathine penicillin now available for the Doctors bag Benzathine benzlypenicillin (Bicillin L-A) is now on the Emergency Drug Supply Schedule (Prescribers Bag - view here).  This makes it much easier for GPs to treat patients with syphilis which is important in view of increasing syphilis rates across the whole of WA, especially in the remote regions.
