A South-West regional service for patients with haematological cancers to be cared for closer to home came to fruition earlier this year with the commencement of a weekly haematology outpatient clinic at Bunbury Hospital.
This initiative is part of the WACHS Cancer Strategy 2017-2022 and recently endorsed WACHS-SW Cancer Plan.
Partnering with Bunbury SJOG Hospital Cancer Centre, where patients receive their treatment, visiting haematologists from Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH), Dr Dustin Hall and Dr Paul Kruger will be seeing patients either face to face or by Telehealth.
“Not all haematological cancers will be able to be managed in the South West and some patients will still have to attend Fiona Stanley Hospital haematology for specialty service, however the patients we can manage safely down here will receive care without the hours of travel”.
“Patients diagnosed with haematological cancers often have many months, if not years of treatment and can travel 3-4 hours for a 20 minute appointment at times. The patient feedback for this service has been very positive”. Jacqui Macnish SW-Cancer Nurse Consultant.
The service is receiving positive feedback from those who have used the new service “I would have to catch a coach to Fiona Stanley Hospital every week and stay overnight and catch a coach home the next day for a 20 minute appointment. This will be so much easier for me as I can get the bus and be home in the afternoon.”
Haematology Service in the South West
