Due to the potential to improve birth outcomes for mothers and babies, screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), defined as high blood sugar levels first detected in pregnancy, is recommended for pregnant women. The recommended oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is difficult to complete, requiring women to fast overnight, consume a sugar drink and have three blood tests over two hours. The ORCHID study found that despite completing other antenatal investigations, half of pregnant women from rural and remote WA did not have an OGTT, with Aboriginal women even less likely to be screened.
